Absolutely the toughest thing to paint. On the other hand a very interesting social experience. Because I paint from life I've been in some very interesting rooms with some very interesting people over the years. The portrait is a collaboration between the sitter and the painter. During the time I'm there we come to an understanding (I hope) of how the sitter wants to be seen and I get an idea of what kinds of signifiers to include in the composition.
